The self-empowerment movement is popular with younger people, and if you are part of this young group, the How to Be an Antiracist pamphlet may be a helpful guide. But, some older folks also have been inspired by this type of activism, which can have harmful consequences on some people. Therefore, I would like to talk about this issue briefly.
First of all, you may have heard that “white supremacy” is still alive and well in the United States. If you are a college student, you may feel challenged to fight the battle against white supremacy.
The second thing you should know is that, while anti-racism is important and we must always work towards preventing people from being racist, white supremacy is not going away. If it was, the Civil Rights Movement would not have existed for so long.
So, how can antiracist work with white supremacy? In other words, if you are working with white supremacists, you are also working against your own causes.
What you need to understand is that antiracists are better than white supremacists because they recognize the need to look at the root of the problem. In other words, the difference between anti-racists and white supremacists is that the former look at racism as a symptom, not as the cause. Visit us at How to Be an Antiracist Audio Book.
Anti-racists, on the other hand, look at racism as the cause of all forms of discrimination. What they are doing is looking at racism as a systemic, institutional problem that needs to be addressed.
This means that it is not acceptable to simply yell “racist” at someone and expect him or her to get over it. And, the more white supremacy is brought down in society, the more entrenched racism will become.
White supremacy has nothing to do with skin color. It has everything to do with American culture. And, while racism is completely unacceptable, it is only the surface.
